Snow Day Deja Vu

We awoke to a wonderland of white again this morning.  The trees are laced with powdery snow, the ground is covered, and even the sky looks white.

Most of the birds have taken cover, but the juncos live up to their name of snow bird.  They are out and about and pecking away at stray seed beneath the bird feeders.

Silver and Shanti snuggle indoors, comfortably oblivious to the snow storm outdoors.

New Arrivals

Silver

Shanti

Already adding so much love to out home are our two new kittens.  Silver, a male with beautiful golden eyes and Shanti, a female so dainty and petite.  It's so fun to watch them play and explore their new environment.  They are the perfect kitty pair for us and for each other!

Inspiration

The newly fallen snow provided the inspiration for my new miniature painting.  I simply gazed out the big window in front of my easel and painted the trees and snowline.  We have cottontail rabbits nesting under some shrubs out back, so, although I didn't actually see a rabbit outside at the time, I used a little artistic license and added a bunny bounding through the snow for interest.

Window to a Wintry World

This weekend, about 30 inches of snow fell, more than I can ever remember accumulating in our area from one blizzard.  Outside our windows is a winter wonderland, made sparkly today with the arrival of the sun.  Throughout the storm, the animals hunkered down out of sight, aside from a herd of deer that braved the elements to feast on whatever they could find amongst the shrubbery before it got enveloped in white.

There was a flurry of activity today, as the snows stopped and the sun shone bright.  Birds and squirrels rushed to and fro and ate their fill at our backyard feeders once again.

Winter Solstice

The shortest day of the year was stark and gray.  Tomorrow, and each day thereafter, will be longer and lighter, but today winter began on a somber note.  The winter season provides us an opportunity to go inward and reflect upon each moment.  It also gives us the chance to slow down and call up our fondest memories.  Winter, in all its bleakness, gently reminds us to treasure the peace and solace it offers.  It is a time for stillness.
